Keyter’s new Helvetia scroll chiller used in commercial buildings, increasing energy efficiency while reducing carbon emissions and operating costs.
Keyter will use Honeywell’s ready-now Solstice® ze (R-1234ze) refrigerant in their new Helvetia scroll chillers for commercial building applications. With a global warming potential (GWP) of less than one, Solstice ze is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant that has a GWP that is 99.9 percent lower than R-410A and allows industry professionals to stay compliant with regulations while benefitting from government subsidies that are calling for reduced-impact alternatives to high GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

use the new Danfoss DSG scroll compressors, which have been optimized for use with Honeywell’s Solstice ze refrigerant. The adoption of these scroll compressors in Keyter’s product range increases energy efficiency when compared to models utilizing R-410A or R-454B, while also offering the same cooling capacity. These compressors are also available with high temperature models, making them a viable choice for heating applications.
“As an Andalusian-based organization, we are located in one of the hottest areas of Europe, which enables us to test our machines under extreme circumstances. Honeywell’s Solstice ze technology surpassed performance expectations and its environmental benefits align with global requirements and our mission to preserve the planet, making it the ideal solution,” said Francisco Raya, sales and marketing director, Keyter.
Additionally, Keyter is developing a new range of air-cooled heat pumps with Solstice ze refrigerant addressing reversible systems for dedicated heating applications. Solstice ze supports this new generation model to reach higher condensing temperatures, enabling high-temperature water production of up to 90°C, while existing models only achieve water temperatures of 55°C–65°C due to their relatively low condensing temperatures.
Solstice ze can increase the energy efficiency of chillers and can help lower total operating costs for customers. Scroll chiller technology using Solstice ze also supports accelerated decarbonization of commercial buildings by eliminating the need for a fossil fuel boiler to generate hot water for heating.
“With Solstice ze, Honeywell is providing Keyter with a high-performing solution that has an ultra-low GWP satisfying the European F-Gas Regulation, supports the reduction of energy bills and can help accelerate the decarbonization goals of commercial buildings” said Julien Soulet, vice president and general manager, Fluorine Products, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Honeywell Advanced Materials. “Honeywell’s Solstice technology is ready-now to support our customers’ innovation and drive their environmental transformations.”
Honeywell has invested more than one billion dollars in research, development and new capacity for its Solstice technology, having anticipated the need for lower-GWP solutions to combat climate change more than a decade ago. The product line, which helps customers lower their greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency without sacrificing end-product performance, includes refrigerants for supermarkets, air conditioning for cars and trucks, blowing agents for insulation, propellants for personal and household care and solvents for cleaning solutions.
Using Honeywell Solstice technology has helped avoid the potential release of the equivalent of more than 295 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere so far, equal to the carbon emissions from nearly 688 million barrels of oil.
Honeywell is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations and facilities by 2035 and recently announced a new set of commitments that further advance its sustainability goals, including committing to set a science-based target with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) that will include scope 3 emissions and participation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Climate Challenge. The company also supports the Paris Climate Agreement. These efforts build on the company’s track record of sharply reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities as well as its decades-long history of innovation to help its customers meet their environmental and social goals. In 2021, approximately 60% of Honeywell’s new product introduction research and development investment was directed toward products that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers.
