KEYTER Leads Prototype Equipment Design for ClimaFARM Project, Driving Sustainable Solutions for the Livestock Sector

KEYTER, a specialist in climate control solutions, plays a key role in the development of the ClimaFARM project, which aims to create a sustainable climate control system to improve thermal conditions and air quality in livestock farms. This project seeks to combat heat stress that affects cattle productivity, especially in regions with extreme temperatures like Andalusia, where milk production can drop by up to 40% due to adverse conditions.

In collaboration with a consortium that includes COVAP, Cetemet, the University of Córdoba, and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Andalucía, KEYTER has been responsible for designing and manufacturing prototype equipment currently being tested on pilot farms. These systems are designed to regulate temperature, humidity, and air quality, ensuring optimal conditions for livestock throughout the year.

The system developed by KEYTER is based on advanced cooling technologies that use eco-friendly refrigerants with low GWP (Global Warming Potential) and harness renewable energy through solar panels. The prototype operates using a refrigerant gas compression cycle, cooling and dehumidifying the environment to achieve optimal conditions in livestock facilities. Additionally, it integrates a heat recovery system that uses exhaust air to enhance energy efficiency.

Innovation in Livestock Climate Control

KEYTER’s approach goes beyond maintaining a controlled environment. The system’s automation, based on 4.0 technologies, includes smart sensors that monitor environmental conditions in real time, automatically adjusting parameters to optimize climate control. This not only improves animal welfare but also boosts milk production by up to 15%, according to preliminary tests.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

One of ClimaFARM’s core pillars is its commitment to sustainability. By utilizing renewable energy sources and minimizing the carbon footprint, KEYTER contributes to a more efficient and environmentally friendly livestock industry. The reduction in energy consumption, thanks to solutions like 100% outdoor air cooling and the use of cross-flow heat recovery systems, allows for more optimized resource management.

Next Steps

Backed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and co-financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development of the Andalusian Government, the ClimaFARM project is moving towards creating an efficient model that can be replicated in livestock farms at both the national and international levels.
